Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada, and for good reason. Situated in the south-central York Region, it possesses a rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful scenery. With plenty to do for people of all ages, Richmond Hill is one of the Greater Toronto Area’s bright spots.

We represent a number of luxurious properties and homes for sale in Richmond Hill, conveniently located just minutes north of Toronto.

Situated in the south-central York Region, the Town of Richmond Hill began as a small settlement located partially in the Township of Vaughan and partially in the Township of Markham. Its development was closely linked with the development of Yonge Street, planned primarily as a military road by the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe.

Richmond Hill was officially incorporated on June 18, 1872, as a village and grew as a result of its proximity to Toronto. Both travellers and farmers would pass through the town on their way to Toronto markets or to-and-from communities further north on Yonge Street.

Richmond Hill became the “rose capital” of Canada early in the twentieth century when several large greenhouse operations were constructed. The village council adopted the motto of the Duke of Richmond (for whom the town may have been named) in the 1920’s. Local artist William Ashford Wright created the town crest, which included elements of the duke’s coat of arms and roses.

Richmond Hill has continued to be a dynamic community with strong historical roots. Even with explosive growth, Richmond Hill has kept a friendly, down-to-earth flavour – hence the town’s unofficial motto: “A little north, a little nicer.”

Richmond Hill is home to the largest telescope in Canada, the David Dunlop Observatory Telescope. It is bounded by Bloomington Road to the north, York Regional Road 7 to the south, Bathurst St to the west and Highway 404 to the east. Its southern limit is 4 km north of the Toronto City Limits.

Richmond Hills Neighborhoods

Most of the industrial and business areas, including the town’s hotels, lie in the southern part of Richmond Hill.

Central Richmond Hill is home to Times Square, a main commercial and entertainment area consisting of shops, restaurants, housing, malls, plazas and theatres. The main Chinese commercial area is also here, which grew and developed in the 1990’s as Chinese immigration increased in the area.

Historical Richmond Hill is considered to be in the northern part of town. It still consists of farmland, which is being slowly developed.
