Located in south-central York Region, the Town of Richmond Hill began as a small settlement located partially in the Township of Vaughan and partially in the Township of Markham. Its development was closely linked with the development of Yonge Street, planned primarily as a military road by the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe.

Richmond Hill is home to largest telescope in Canada, the David Dunlop Observatory Telescope. It is bounded by Bloomginton Road to the north, York Regional Road 7 to the south, Bathurst St to the west and Highway 404 to the east. Its southern limit is 4 km north of the Toronto City Limits.
